I am well aware that most artists have a minefield to navigate through when it comes to publicity and accessibility with the public but I cannot help think that some of them handle it pretty poorly, as a fan I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in a persons private life as I defend their right to have one and in all honesty in 99% of cases it would prove very boring anyway… why do we think their lives are so much more exciting than ours when in truth most of the time they are not. I take the stance that my ticket/cd purchase gets me just that… a cd or a ticket to the gig… from this I expect value for money in that I want a good show and if I wait to try and say hello after its over I just wish them to be polite that’s all, nothing more, who their latest squeeze is male.. female or even animal is of no consequence to me.. unless it was my partner or dog then I may be interested.
I have great admiration for most artists and what they give of themselves to keep us the music paying public happy although in most cases they are rewarded well to compensate for the life that they have chosen which does include putting yourself in the public eye… so when we take an interest in the musical side of things accept it… if I come round your house going through your bins or staring through your windows… approach you when you are out with family or friends feel free to tell me where to go… but if I am approaching you in the light of your performance or merely taking photos /videos on the night please do not go all prima donna on me as this is the trade off for your fame. I would never use any footage/photos other than for my own interest as photography is my passion and if I share with friends anything I have produced it is actually only enhancing the artist concerned not detracting from them.
Right you may ask where is all this leading, well a certain very well known artist who I choose not to name but most people will know who this refers to has recently employed a company to ensure no videos /photos etc appear anywhere other than on his own site, to this end peoples youtube accounts and myspace accounts have been stopped due to breach of copywrite, I myself have lost all of my Youtube footage 95% of it not related to the aforementioned artist at all and stupidly many of them were not backed up, to say this has upset me could be somewhat of an understatement when I think of all the money I have spent on tickets and travel to see him and may I say had a brilliant time but this has detracted from this and made me adamant that not another penny will leave my pocket to go into his… of course he is at the stage in his career when this would not matter but it makes me feel better.
On a positive I want to say a big thanks to all you lovely guys who smile sweetly at the camera and have no problem at all and I have no hesitation in naming you… The Feeling… The Script… James Morrison.. Sam Beeton.. Rushmore.. 10 Reasons to Live, Keith Urban and loads loads more whose photos adorn my house… strangely someone has now disappeared which is sad really that he should want to alienate fans in this way.
