Lets Talk Music

It would not take much of an astute person to recognise that Music pretty much fills my life, well the bits in between work, that annoying thing that I have to fit in to fund my mad lifestyle… not for me the wait until payday to rush to the designer outlet or book some exotic holiday … my idea of heaven is to log online to Ticketmaster and Easyjet and plan some mad exploit.

Of late I have to say that most of my exploits have actually been UK based with odd little soirees across the water to the Emerald Isle, so whilst previous years Milan, Munich, Zurich and such like would be my destinations the last few months have seen me visit the wonderful hot spots of Manchester , Leeds , Birmingham and such like and whilst they may not be so glamorous as trips around the world if you have a great band waiting at the end of the road who cares… great music is great even if it is played in your garden shed… it’s the talent , ability and all round charisma of the artists that count not the venue.

With this in mind I decided a resume of 2009 was called for even though it is only the last day of February.

January was the quietest month I have known for gigs in many a year, but maybe I was just getting ready for February which turned out to be somewhat of a classic.

The end of last year was all about The Feeling a band who I love so much and their gigs are such a riot I defy anyone to not have a great time, and their fans are pretty damn special too, sadly this year looks like being pretty TF free but you never know they may surprise us with an odd gig or two, sadly the one I had booked up for in Meribel was cancelled but when one door closes another one opens and in this case behind the door was those great guys from Dublin,The Script. I had seen them a few times last year and loved them in a low key kind of way pretty much like their gigs just great music performed in a non razmataz way which I actually quite like, this year however I detected a shift in their confidence, it was great to see that they had grown into and believed their well earned reputation, this was no longer a band overawed by their surroundings and the time had arrived for the rewards of all their hard work, long may this continue as their music is outstanding and a nicer bunch of guys it would be hard to find.

Along with the Script as support was Gary Go another really nice guy with heaps of talent and excellent material, and yet for some reason I still find myself undecided as to what the future holds for him; at present his star is ascending well ,but I am left wondering if it may stall before he attains the success he so rightly deserves , I guess the jury is out on that one and only time will tell.

Also on the bill for this tour was a new band to me Will and The People, caught them a few times… well more than a few I believe it was 8 !!! including a drive past the Kaisers , well it had to be done I am sure they did not miss me; of Will and the gang I have no doubt their star is ascending, and is not going to stop until it reaches the stratosphere , seldom have I seen a band more likely for guaranteed success ( if there is such a thing) as these guys. To be fair their music is way removed from what I would normally listen to and this is what convinces me they are the real deal,I am totally converted to their Ska/Reggae sound and that must be a testament to their great interpretation and charisma as I have rock music written through my very soul.

If at the end 2009 they are not the band on everyone’s lips I will be amazed and very disappointed .

Now the above has all been about who I have seen but my all time favourites have of course not got a mention as they have not gigged yet, I can wax lyrical about these guys for hours, in fact I believe I have on many occasions much to most peoples amusement , but how are you going to know how fantastic these boys are if I do not tell you… well come along to a gig that’s a good start, many of my mates of TF fame are going to , I love it when people are not that blinkered that they will not entertain gigs other than their “Favourite” band, as you can see I find loads of bands fantastic in different ways and my life is that much richer for everyone of them. So please people get out there and see 10 Reasons to Live when you get a chance, you will have a great time and hear some of the best music to have come out of Liverpool since 4 other guys wrote and sang a bit.

Finally I need to mention my mates The Aviators , these boys are young shiny and new but what they lack in years they certainly make up for in talent and commitment to their music, I have seen lots of young bands over the last few years but theses guys have a maturity that belies their years.. well to be honest they can be pretty silly, but musically they are putting in the miles and the effort and have a great talent yet to be fulfilled but I am sure it will be before long if they get the break they deserve.

So to March … The Script in Madrid, Will and The People and The Aviators all over the place and fingers cross 10 Reasons to Live in London… oh and somewhere in there is a Snow Patrol gig… that’s if I do not drive past on the way to somewhere else.
