If you entered the above information into your Sat Nav I have no idea where it would lead you , but in my case it took me on the best tour I have experienced in the last few years.
This was a long awaited return of my friends Will and The People to the main stage where they belong and when you add Paolo Nutini into the mix it was always going to be one for the history books…
Blackpool was a great venue with excellent sound and although the first leg of the tour it went without a hitch… highlight of that night, well apart from all the artists showing their talent to the full was meeting up with a blast from the past Adam a memory from the days of Rushmore and brilliant to chat over old times. The crowd fully appreciated Will and The People which after all was my main interest helping to make people realise just how great this band is, to be honest they need very little help the music and performance speaks for itself. I actually missed Paolo performance other than listening from the foyer as spreading the WATP word beckoned but they sounded superb… to soon it was all over and it was off on the road home.
The few short hours in between the gigs, far to few spent in my bed, soon sped past and it was off to Nottingham and Rock City for another instalment , once again nothing to fault but the highlight of this night was the after show Jam in a nearby pub.. instigated by Will this was one of those moment you just dream of… no need for bright lights big sound systems and massive crowds just a group of great musicians doing what they do best entertaining…in fact it was way to entertaining and before long I realised it was 01:30 I was in a pub lock in with Paolo Nutini and Co and my car park closed at 01:20 oops quick goodbyes and mad dash to car park where a kind security man let me out…………
After yet again to few hours sleep, and a few hours work it was off to Birmingham and my first full show of the tour… this time I was firmly on that barrier for the whole show and not just Will… and I think tonight produced the onstage highlight of the tour.. in Will’s performance of “The Game” which is surely the song that will catapult this immensely talented young man into stardom we had a guest appearance from Donny Little, lead guitarist with Paolo… now I am going to be honest and say I had no idea who he was before this tour but he was the discovery of the tour for me, I already knew I loved Will & Paolo but this guy was a legend on the guitar and I could actually just watch him for the whole show.
I sat out the London gig as for some reason gigs in the Capital never really do it for me, no idea why, so it was a couple of days rest and then off for a weekend on the South Coast, I am waiting to say that we had a duff gig but in honesty this was not the case up to now, and Bournemouth & Portsmouth did nothing to change the 100% record of great music and I am sure this tour had added loads of fans to the Will and The People Fan Base. Here I will take a few moments to mention the other superb support One Eskimo a totally chilled out band but I really loved them.
So all to soon it was Manchester the last night of the tour for Will, a return to a venue I had seen him before when he supported the Script a fact that this young man had totally forgotten … see Will sometimes I can be useful if only to jog your memory as to where you have played., another great night tinged with sadness but I just had to do one really naughty thing… check out a tour bus.. right I already know Will had a tour bus where the maid just never turned up to clean , but what about Paolo.. well let me tell you I do not know what other artists do on tour buses but these guys just sit around drinking and chatting.. another myth dispelled J
It was a bit of a low the next day and the next until that call came that Will was off to join Paolo on the final leg of the tour in Scotland.. could I book holiday at such short notice? of course .. where there’s a Will there’s a way .
Case packed it was off on the long drag to Dundee, I am often asked why do I do it.. the simple answer is because I can and I want to, I can think of no better way to spend my time and cash than listening to great live music, I am never going to apologise for being lucky enough to do this as I do actually work hard and sacrifice a lot to be able to live my dream, but its totally my choice and I never have any regrets, and my greatest pleasure is to see artists I admire attain their true potential.
All to soon the 3 gigs in Scotland were over.. it was a great 3 nights, as ever Will and Co the catalyst for all my travels were superb, I truly never tire of this band, they are just so special, but to be lucky enough to catch Paolo an absolute hero of mine was such a bonus I am still pinching myself.
So my overall highlights of this mad 3 weeks……..
I met some really great people from all over the world and it was a real pleasure..
As ever its all about Will & Co as no excuses again they are my favourite all time band and the whole tour has been an absolute pleasure.. well actually of course some bits have been a bit annoying but nothing can ever be perfect… and I expect I have had moments when I annoyed as well :-)
Discovery of the tour.. well no contest there .. Donny, one of the best guitarists I know legendary .
Most amusing person.. got to be Charlie
Funniest moment… Council Street Cleaners asking if I wanted them to clean out the Willmobile… what were they trying to say we all know boys are a little untidy .
Saddest moment… the end of course .. til the next time
